029 – Do run with scissors

In the beginner’s mind there are many possibilities,
In the expert’s mind there are few.

As much as I love talking with people who know about stuff, I find it frustrating when they won’t consider a new approach or two – under any circumstances. Change your minds, people. At least as often as you change your undies!

Today I got a chance to do one of my favorite ways of getting unstuck, creatively speaking. Here’s how to do it. Run through the library just fast enough so that you can read a title every now and again. Adjust your speed to suit. Then cut off (just using your eyes) titles from here and there, and reassemble them into new book titles. And then, when you get to the end of the aisle, make a note of the ‘book title’ and see where that leads your thinking to.

Here are some of my faves saved from days gone by —

The New Tarantulas

Time Vampires

Breaking the Curlews

I’ve often thought about Time Vampires – always thought that’s such a lucky assemblage – I can see a book/web site/consultancy based on those annoying little things that slurp time out of your day. Waiting for your computer to start, for the lift to arrive, for the phone to connect, e-mail etc – the list of tiny annoyances that over time suck your day dry.

You hate the idea? Well, don’t be sitting here whining about my suck idea, get yourself some mental scissors and start running through the library.

Update: Apparently running through the library is a bad idea and the librarians don’t like this kind of activity. Note to self – get fitter, then out pace them.

Manifesto
14. Every day the ordinary can be the extraordinary.
32. Every day have a laugh.
43. Every day accept you will make mistakes. Learn from them. They are opportunities in disguise.
