033 – We’re standing…

…on the shoulders of giants.

I found the cabbage that had been sitting on top of our fridge for a few days had decided to put out some fresh new leaves. I was struck by how beautiful the leaves were, and how the brave little leaves were striking out for their own independence, while standing on the strong foundation.

I – we – all stand on the shoulders of giants – the people who have gone before us. Some have been family, friends, or total strangers – invisible people seemingly utterly disconnected and yet they are deeply influential in our lives. Somebody figured out how to get water into the tap – if you’re reading this there’s a very good chance you can safely drink straight from the tap. There’s a relationship between internet access and not having to go to a well for your water.

Like everyone in New Zealand we are either first generation migrants or our ancestors were migrants. My mother’s parents came out from Denmark in the early 1900s. Denmark was not a land of vibrant opportunity then – my grandfather was a young farm worker who for an unspoken reason left Denmark, arrived in Sydney and asked some Danish folk there, “Is this as far away from Denmark as it is possible to get?”

“No, New Zealand is further on.”

And so my Danish family started here. It’s a story literally filled with blood, sweat, and tears – like every pioneer story – and laughter and love. It’s too long to share here, but I can say my grandmother followed on, also travelling alone. When she left Denmark her sister took off her coat and gave it to my grandmother so she’d at least have a coat in N.Z. She had pitifully little else. Except faith, hope, and love – and that’s been enough for a journey I’m still continuing, standing on the shoulders of giants.

15. Every day make a difference to yourself and others.
24. Every day is a journey. Not a destination.
37. Every day fight for what’s worth fighting for. Pick your battles.
