After a long day spent mostly feeling like the new kid in the sandbox I was feeling more than a little frazzled for myself. You might’ve been there – you feel the other kids are bolder, bigger, smarter, cooler, and well, mysterious. I’m not normally like this – I usually take myself out of the situation and go do something more productive for myself. As soon as I got a clear shot I was gone, off, me and my camera on the mean streets of Dunedin.
And then I saw this truth taped to a sign, and it was just the wakeup call I needed. Dr. Seuss. I remembered The Cat in the Hat from primary school. I loved that book. The idea that a children’s book could be funny? That learning to read could be fun? Changed my life. And then, again, today. I immediately felt better – I didn’t have to keep up with the other kids, just get on with being the truer youer. That’s what really matters.
Meanwhile, back in the sandbox…? Who cares! I was off making photos and discovering what I could in the time I had available.
And that’s how life is.
