041 – Shore thing

Where does discontent start? You are warm enough, but you shiver. You are fed, yet hunger gnaws you. You have been loved, but your yearning wanders in new fields. And to prod all these there’s time, the Bastard Time. — John Steinbeck

Sandy beaches just don’t do it for me at all. I was raised with sandy beaches, and despite enjoying splashing around in the waves, it’s the rocky shore that does it for me. I’ve spent many hours looking in rock pools.

For ten years I kept a marine aquarium holding specimens I’d collected from the pools – and I spent countless hours staring at the ‘exotic’ creatures. I don’t really understand what made the creatures so fascinating – I’d kept freshwater fish for many years before – but the marine specimens kept me entertained for hours. The sea anemones produced babies, the prawns got eaten by fish who’d reached the critical (I’m big enough to eat you) stage, sea hares loped around eating sea lettuce, rock fish (they of the three lateral lines) could be charmed out of hiding by the reflections of a coffee cup, and then there were the charming triple fins – I miss the tank and the creatures, I don’t miss the work involved in keeping everything running.

Today on the south coast the waves were churning in and the brisk wind whipped the edges of waves into the streams of spray – ‘white horses’ as my Mum called them. Vibrant waves, dancing and leaping in the sunshine. Rainbows wafting in the spray. I made several hundred photos, but in the end it was, as ever, the glassy water in a rock pool that appealed most to me. No surprises there – time spent peering into rock pools is more likely to soothe the discontented beast in me than most anything else.
