049 – Seeking an adventure

I seem to be surrounded by people who are restless. They want something different but they’re struggling to know how to bring about the change they are seeking. I spent quite a bit of time today with one of these people.

“Have you got time for a coffee?” she asked.

“Sure,” I said. Little did I realise what would unfold as a result of that coffee and chat.

When we arrived back at the office I heard her make four telephone calls. I was excited by the snippets I overheard of these conversations (in an open plan office you don’t miss much!).

About an hour later she turned to me and said, “I’ve booked a two week holiday to Thailand. My tickets are all organised and paid for.” I was thrilled for her – this was exactly what she has been craving for a while now.

“You said you wanted an adventure, so now you’re going to have one,” I responded following her announcement.

“Now I need to get my leave approved,” she said. This seemed an insignificant detail to her at that point.

After months of wanting to do something different, something adventurous, all it took was for her to make a decision and then make four phone calls. The first was to a potential travel companion. The second was to her partner. The third was to her doctor to check if she needed to get any vaccinations for the trip. The fourth was to a travel agent (to inquire about flights, times and costs to get to and from her planned for destination). It was so easy even she was shocked.

Now my colleague is going to spend time with real elephants while I continue to stare longingly at my wooden versions. Elephants are such magnificent all-knowing creatures. I look at them and I see strength, wisdom, determination and a pace of life that I aspire to.
