050 – Squint

Can it be? A sunny day? Finally? And suddenly everyone’s out strutting their stuff and life is good. It’s been funny, tho, seeing everyone wandering around with their eyes all squinty – surely they’re not all trying to do a Clint Eastwood impersonation.

Today’s shot stars one of the local Tui (Prosthemadera novaeseelandiae) – if you go for a lunchtime stroll you can spot Tui also busy having lunch. The yellow on his beak is the pollen from the flax flowers, gathered while the amiable Tui guzzled the nectar from the flower cup. Flowers probably invented the concept bribery in exchange for sex – as the Tui bounces off in search of more nectar, the flowers are pollinated – brilliant. In addition to having the bribery nectar, they are shaped to accommodate the Tui beak. I tell you, flowers have no shame whatsoever.

It’s always interesting to see Tui in bright light like this. At a distance, and without bright light, it’s easy to imagine their plumage is flat black. Clearly this is not the case – up close, clear eyes, the colours have rich and varied hues, an iridescence that contrasts with the white throat and shoulder feathers. There’s far more there than what first meets the eyes. Kind of like us all, really. We think we see people, but you never really do until you get up close.

Manifesto
25. Every day your light shines for others to see.
29. Every day eat, drink, rest, work, exercise, play, love, create for your own good. And the good of others.
48. Every day there are things you can’t change. You can change the way you think about them and deal with them.
