056 – Let’s boogie

We dance for laughter, we dance for tears, we dance for madness, we dance for fears, we dance for hopes, we dance for screams, we are the dancers, we create the dreams.

Nothing beats having a boogie – anywhere, anytime. It is one of life’s joys and this urge should never be quelled.

Music always makes me want to move. A finger starts tapping, then my hands and feet start moving, and I find myself being lifted out of my seat as though someone is pulling me saying “come dance with me” – it is almost an unconscious reaction that I can’t control. The notes infuse every cell of my body and I need to respond by expressing what I am feeling. It just happens and it makes me feel so good. I am not a great dancer but who cares. I let the music guide me and I am so totally consumed by the moment that nothing else matters.

As I was growing up I was always surrounded by music and dancing. We used to have regular dances and balls at our local Croatian Club which would involve a live band playing and us dancing until we dropped. When the band left the records would come on. We used to have the best time ever.

I learnt ballet as a child. As I grew older I was involved with a Croatian Folklore group where we performed at all sorts of functions locally and out of town. We danced at home. We danced at friend’s places. Every function we went to involved music, singing and dance – none of this standing around talking drinking as we do today.

When the going got tough I would turn the music up loud and dance with my kids.

When life was unbearable I would dance by myself and cry my heart out.

When I fell in love I held my man close, moved to the music and felt like nothing in the world mattered because I loved and I was loved.

When I come home from work overwhelmed by my day I head straight for the music, turn it on as high as I can, blast my senses and move with all my might. It helps me get through.

There are other times when Lynsey and I are cooking and a song comes on and I grab him to dance with me. Anyone looking on would think we’re crazy – things boiling away, timers going off – and we’re dancing.

These are the moments that make it all worthwhile.

Yes, I do love a good boogie, whenever the music talks to me and talk to me it does.

As my late dad always used to say, “If you’re walking on thin ice you may as well dance.”
