065 – Ten things I know about lemons

Ten things I know about lemons are:

  1. They’re yellow which reminds me of the sunshine and always makes me smile.
  2. They are acidic – some varieties are more so than others. Lemonade lemons are the best. You can eat them like an orange. They are tangy but have a sweetness and freshness about them that is quite unique. We are trying to grow a lemonade lemon tree in our garden – a slow process but things are happening.
  3. Lemon juice can stop fruits like apples and avocados from going brown.
  4. Lemon juice can be used to stop bee stings from itching.
  5. To remove the smell of onions or garlic from your hands, rub them with lemon and then rinse.
  6. Lemons are a rich source of vitamin C.
  7. Starting the day with lemon water gets the metabolism going.
  8. Lemons are great in baking and cooking – Lemon and ginger cake; Rossi’s lemon muffins; lemon meringue pie; lemon slice; lemon icing on banana cake;  mum’s lemon honey; lemon marmalade; lemon sorbet; Danish lemon pudding; lemon chicken; lemon with fish and other seafood – I could go on endlessly with personal and family favourites.
  9. Lemons make fantastic drinks and garnishes in drinks – lemon barley water; brandy, ginger ale and lemon; gin and tonic with lemon; lemon, honey and ginger; lemon tea; lemon balm and lemon verbena herb teas with slices of lemon.
  10. Nothing beats a real lemon. ‘Lab’ lemon is not the same (or even similar).

Let’s face it, lemons are wonder products and there is nothing quite the same as going into your own garden and picking them fresh off the tree.

Manifesto
14. Every day the ordinary can be the extraordinary.
30. Every day use all your senses. Touch. Smell. Taste. Hear. See.
33. Every day try something new.

Gosh, I’f forgotten all about lemon muffins – must have a hunt for the recipe! Now, you’ve got my tastebuds tingling!!! I begin each day with a glass of water and lemon juice, but Ket’s always telling me it’ll eat away at the enamel on my teeth. Whatever….

Great to see lemon-love is a family thing :-)

If you can’t find the recipe Ros I have it – actually I think it is handwritten by you!

As for wearing away the enamel on your teeth … I did some digging online and this is what is suggested to protect your teeth from acid wear (lemon juice in disguise) …

“Drink a lot of water after eating or drinking. Drink acidic beverages through a straw so the liquid doesn’t have much contact with your teeth. Avoid brushing your teeth right after a highly acidic meal or drink. If you brush right after, you are just brushing your teeth with the acid. So, be patient, wait 30-40 minutes before you brush.”

Now this is going to be interesting. I think I might try drinking my morning hot lemon water through a straw – sounds like fun!

    Love to both of you
