095 – Pick up the prescription

My friend Alison emailed me today offering a prescription from a certain dispensary up town a little. The email arrived as I was having one of the many daily crises and rather than inflict my angst and horror on someone who didn’t need my bad news I tried to beg off.

Alison is not someone to be trifled with. She wrote back words to the effect of, “I’m a Doctor, I insist!”

I slammed back in my chair like I’d received an electric shock. My eyes welled up. My heart was racing and I could hear the blood pounding in my ears. I have been waiting and waiting for this day. I pulled myself together with a sniff. I sidelined some work activities, flicked a quick email off to confirm I’d be right there, called Marica, loaded up my briefcase and raced off to pick up my prescription. Well, you have to take advice from your Doctor, right?

It’s not *that* kind of advice. Alison’s advice was “Make sure you get a good supervisor – it’s useless if you don’t – and then go for it, you can do it.”

We enjoyed a glass of wine to celebrate our friend’s new PhD, won against the pain of working under dubious supervision, personal loss, and the usual (and let’s be honest, unusual) trials of work and life. A fantastic effort, congratulations! The best thing is that now there’s a gap and we can all get drawn along to follow.

And then there was the talk of a tiny bar – a suitable dispensary. I love this idea – I’ve attached a photo of my proposed venue – the floor below (and including the observatory dome) – a cyber/steampunk venue in brass, polished wood, and leather – and I’ll share the secret of the world’s best martini with you.

Congratulations again, Alison, love on you.
