108 – Some have it, some don’t

Some people have the gift of Christmas spirit while others don’t. We’re all aware of it and we all tend to know when it’s absent within ourselves and others. Some years it may be stronger in us than other years. Some years we struggle to feel it at all. It can even come and go during the time building up to Christmas Day. All too often the focus is on the commercialisation of the season and not its true meaning – it’s spirit.

So what exactly is Christmas spirit?

I have come to the conclusion that Christmas spirit is something we are in control of – we are the secret behind it. It lies dormant within each of us until something triggers it into action. This is usually the imminent arrival of a certain date in our yearly calendar. It is strongly connected to our personality, family traditions, religious beliefs, other people, things that bring us joy such as Christmas trees, certain foods, music, movies, celebrations, gift giving and having fun.

Christmas spirit could therefore be very different for me than it is for you.

For me, Christmas is a celebration of life. It is about the “human” gifts we each give to one another by being present, open and loving. Christmas is a Christian religious festival after all – it is the celebration of the birth of a baby (yes, Christ is the reason for the season whether we believe in him or not) but Christmas spirit is not something felt only by Christians. It is available to one and all.

Christmas spirit is about our hearts and our actions. In many ways it is a state of being – being kind, caring about the needs of others, helping where we can, being present and gifting our time, smiling, having faith, believing in miracles, delighting in the simple joys of life, being positive, showing appreciation of people, being grateful, sharing – and Christmas is the timely reminder to get back in touch with all of this.

I’m so glad we have these regular reminders to celebrate the gift of life.

Manifesto
15. Every day make a difference to yourself and others.
18. Every day express love. Some people need to hear it. Most people need to see it. Don’t take it for granted.
45. Every day you are a different person.
