294 – The shortest day

It’s the winter solstice today. Well, today and tomorrow. I went for a walk at lunchtime to enjoy the few minutes of clear sunlight, and I wanted to look at the low relief sculptures on on the Cenotaph. This part of the work is from the World War I side of the structure – the images of a rural New Zealand – felling the bush, ploughing using horses or cattle, farm dogs, and country boys heeding the call to war. The other side shows a more urban kind of scene – I don’t think I’ve seen an art work showing how for much of New Zealand by the end of World War II the environment was urban rather than rural.

Every day is the shortest day for someone. Someone’s precious life is cut short – through war, work, accident, old age, or just because. Make every day count.

Manifesto
04. Every day is an opportunity to cultivate the promise of the future.
13. Every day be better than you were the day before.
20. Every day say thank you.
