303 – Banks

The Old Bank building has been beautifully restored, renovated, and re-purposed from a Victorian styled bank through to a Victorian styled shopping centre. It’s easy to imagine pudgy bankers in three piece suits – ties, silk handkerchiefs in top pockets, shiny punch top brogues. I just love the earthy colours and sympathetic use of materials – it’s very hard to detect what is new and what is original. Add in the wooden greco-roman pillars – it’s an odd combination of establishment and authority and all of the trappings of stability and responsibility that I’d expect and respect from a bank; but in wood? How colonial! The end result is more postmodern pastiche than classical – but I think that’s in keeping with the Wellington vibe.

The old bank gives way via an underground walkway through a marble lined food hall and retail setting – it’s hideous. A totally graceless void beneath a new bank edifice. Nothing cozy there, and no thought of lasting 50 to 100 years – a construction from the paper handkerchief generation.

33. Every day try something new.
