304 – Flying the flag

The Beehive has a new big flag. Or perhaps the flag has a new big base for its pole. There’s an ongoing grind around changing the flag into something more…more…actually, I have no idea why there’s a push to change the flag. I’m glad there are people who want to do this because when they launch into me in the street it’s fun watching them trying to pull together some sort of rationale. I don’t understand why people get frothed up about this kind of stuff.

I think maybe it’s all about branding – they believe our flag isn’t completely and utterly unique. It’s true. There are other flags that imitate ours. Australia, for example. It’s not surprising – our nations were founded at about the same time – by the same colonising people – and at one point, the state of New South Wales was the administrative centre for New Zealand. We still export huge numbers of our brightest and best people to Australia. As nations we’re like twins. So it makes sense to have similar flags – you know how twins are always dressed alike.
