Money can’t buy me love…

I’m not so sure – at $2/toy there’s a good deal of cuteness to be had outside the Salvation Army store today. I do love me a cute soft toy. Paintings of Elvis on velvet. Tables that will rock from side-to-side on a floor that has been laser levelled to the micron. Lamps that smell of cat vomit once they’ve been on for 45 minutes. Kitchen appliances that are more about kitsch than application. And all the rest of the human detritus that swirls around in the off-retail world.

This is the one thing that genuinely separates us from the animals.

Second-hand goods.

When the aliens arrive, or the four riders of the apocalypse, or any other superior fire power wielder for that matter, and they wondering about which ones are the beasts and which ones are the beings, it’ll be our relationship with second-hand goods that defines us.

Ok, maybe we’ll get swept up with the crazy bowerbirds, or magpies, but apart from that, none of other creatures collect the way we do. And any that do, do not bother to do so for money. They do for love.

Manifesto
14. Every day the ordinary can be the extraordinary.
8. Every day express love. Some people need to hear it. Most people need to see it. Don’t take it for granted.
22. Every day refine, clarify and simplify.
