Although we are heading into Spring, the southerly wind made it harder for me to believe. It’s not that I didn’t want to believe. I hate the bleak days – not just here in Wellington – but anywhere. I seem to have patina of memories of bleak landscapes blurring slowly into each other, water coloured images melting into each other.

I go for a walk at lunch time – fresh air and blood moving – some energy to get through the afternoon. As I’m walking I wonder what the rest of the world is up to. There’ll be the usual bad things, of course, amplified one moment by the media, forgotten a few seconds later. And there will be as many, if not more, good things to be found in the moment.

Where are you right now? Exactly where, exactly right now?

Are you seeing what you want to see? Or are you seeing what you always see?

I often retreat to my inner jungle. It’s pleasantly warm there. The sun is always rising. The plants are beautiful – fragrant, lush. The animals are starting to move around. I feel as though I’ve been away on the longest journey and it feels so good to be back.

Manifesto
05. Every day is now. The present moment.
14. Every day the ordinary can be the extraordinary.
19. Every day make time for yourself.

If I was a little kid, I think I’d be ready to give this scooter a blast, even thought the park looks like it could do with some drainage. Jump on the scooter, and zoom! The world’s your own. Of course it is all the time, it’s that most guys figure they need an excuse like a mid-life crisis before they buy a scooter.

When I was a kid we didn’t have such coolness to sit on and rock back and forth. We had some kind of framework – like a cube made up of wooden ladders – we called it a ‘jungle gym’. We’d put planks along the rungs to form platforms and next day we’d move them to make a fort, and next day to make a ship. Underneath the jungle gym there was a big patch of gritty sand. I don’t recall a single child being hurt in any way from falls or otherwise. Just plenty of opportunity of creative play. I’m unsure whether such things exist these days, there are scooters.

Friday. Friday! TGIF. Casual Friday. Mine: Full colour Friday – an opportunity to wear brighter colours. But not today. Friday fades. I head back to work today – a one day working week should be good for everyone. My desk, phone, email inbox, physical inbox … my work runneth over. It’s not that I’m famous or essential, it’s just that work undone accumulates, in particular, on my desk. I want tell people to solve their own problems, to go away and act like an adult for a moment. I don’t though. I swing my blade and I start to chop a path through the jungle. I’m still not feeling 100% – I feel that after a week off work I’m ready for a week off work. I feel like a moth without a flame. My photos are just not working for me, so I use this shot Marica made of me blurring out around the edges.

We’re driving home after work. Our car struggles with the hills and glides, fading elegantly into our driveway. We’re all unwell. We’re all unhappy.

There is an immutable conflict at work in life and in business, a constant battle between peace and chaos. Neither can be mastered, but both can be influenced. How you go about that is the key to success. — Philip Knight

It’s been a weekend of work here. My Dad’s generation wouldn’t have recognised it as being work – there’s no sweat so there’s no work. Fortified with coffee and potato crisps I’ve spent the last couple of days building web sites for customers. Some tv wandered past – I didn’t watch. Some cds were played – I didn’t listen. So, where to from here? I climb into my head and wrestle code and negotiate with the web hosting people and juggle this and jungle that. And when I finally climb back out of create mode it’s time for hot coffee and real food. I’m tired and ready for a hot shower and a sleep. It might not be sweaty work, Dad, but it’s work nevertheless.
