006 – Checking out checking out

I had forgotten that today is the day we traditionally dedicate to fathers. Even the advertising we are regularly bombarded with hadn’t communicated this message to me. It was my mother who set me straight.

Consequently I wasn’t prepared for today and I felt bad about that. My father is getting older. He has always been there for me, through the good times and the bad. Acknowledging what he means to me is something I try to do all the time and not just when commercialism dictates. However, Father’s Day is another excuse to formally let my father know how important he is to all of us and how grateful we are that he is in our lives. It is a chance to make him feel special and he deserves that.

My mother had invited us over for lunch. She phoned me this morning and asked if I would bring a few things she needed from the supermarket.

As usual my husband and I were running on a tight schedule. We always try to fit too many things in to the time we have available. We raced around the supermarket picking up the few things we needed and then headed to the checkouts. The queues were long and I could see a clock out of the corner of my eye.

“Don’t be late,” said that little voice that often hounds me.

As we were eyeing up all the queues at the different checkouts we noticed a new self-service checkout available to customers with 15  items or less.

“Here’s your chance to try being a checkout chick,” said my husband. “Are you ready?”

As we headed towards the self-service checkout area I was smiling.

“Be careful what you wish for,” said that voice.”Wishes can come true!”

For years I have said I was going to give up my day-job and become a checkout operator. I believed (rightly or wrongly) that this work would be a lot less pressured than the job I do on a daily basis.

This morning I had my trial as a checkout chick and guess what, I liked it. Maybe this is an option for me to consider after all.

Manifesto
06. Every day you make choices.
11. Every day do something for someone else.
18. Every day express love. Some people need to hear it. Most people need to see it. Don’t take it for granted.
