053 – The ‘on’ ramp

We cannot live for ourselves alone. Our lives are connected by a thousand invisible threads, and along these sympathetic fibers, our actions run as causes and return to us as results. — Herman Melville

I’ve since found out that two babies have been born on my birthday. I think it’s an interesting coincidence. I did a bit scuffling of around and apparently things have moved on since Barnum’s day – the sum of net wisdom is that there are about four people born every minute. On the day of my birthday that means around 5,760 babies were born worldwide, of which Statistics NZ suggest about 170 of them were born here. And I know, personally, of two baby girls (unrelated) that were born on that day. I can’t calculate the odds of that, but it does seem quite high. Cue maths/stats people.

I find it intriguing that not only do these two girls and I share the same birthday, but the connections that make it possible for me to know this means that the girls also have more than me/my presence as a connecting link together. They have other connecting links. Their grandmothers don’t know this, but they once worked together. Their grandmothers now live thousands of kilometers apart.

The links are feeble – like a single strand of a spider’s web – but the connection of coincidence is there. I have never seen a connection like this before, but I’m inclined to believe they are more common than I might’ve previously thought. I accept we are all connected biologically, and connected to the earth, and the sun itself, chemically. Further investigation is required.

We are born and reborn countless number of times, and it is possible that each being has been our parent at one time or another. Therefore, it is likely that all beings in this universe have familial connections. — Dalai Lama
