075 – Painter at work

There are painters who transform the sun into a yellow spot, but there are others who, thanks to their art and intelligence, transform a yellow spot into the sun.
— Pablo Picasso

When my father sold his business he set himself up in another one. This new business demanded a lot of him physically but it suited my father well because his perfectionist streak (translate to doing a superb job) made him very sought after.

“What does your father do?” was a typical question.

“He’s a painter,” we would reply.

My youngest sister liked to spin this out a bit. Her friends assumed being a painter equated to being an artist. As they questioned her further about the type of painter he was she would play along until she got sick of it and then add, “he paints houses.”

My father painted many houses (both outside and inside) over the years. He never advertised  Рall his jobs came to him by word of mouth. In reality he is an artist given the skill and passion he puts into what he does.

Consequently my kids grew up very clear about what their dide’s (grandfather in Croatian) job was – he was a painter.

One day (when my kids were very young) we were driving to a beach house where we were going to spend our summer holiday. One of the kids – there is some dispute as to who it actually was – pointed to the cows in the fields we passed as we drove along the road.

“Look, dide has painted the cows,” they said. “When did he do that?”

My child was convinced that the cows had been painted and that their dide must have done it.

We all burst into laughter.

Since that day every time I see a black and white cow I imagine my wonderful father painting them!

Some moments stay with us forever, even if we can’t remember all the specific details. These are the every day treasures that we always carry with us.

03. Every day is an opportunity to reflect on the past.
32. Every day have a laugh.
49. Every day is a good day.
