089 – De-talented

It’s delightful, it’s delicious, it’s de-lovely.
— Cole Porter, De-Lovely

The promise – a few hours of wonderful music, an evening with special friends, some timeout from ordinary routines.

The reality – all this and more …

Tonight as I sat amongst the audience seated in the beautiful surroundings of Wellington’s Old Town Hall I felt excited. Two very important people were a part of this production – my closest friend Ros and my youngest daughter Mira – and I am so proud of them both. Each contributed different things to this production but both of them were a necessary part of the successful concert that unfolded.

One of Ros’s great attributes (and she has many) is her beautiful voice and her love of singing. I sat in the audience this evening feeling so proud of the special soprano seated in the front row of the Orpheus Choir singing Cole Porter songs with such enthusiasm. You could see the joy on her face even though I was some distance away from her.

Sitting on my lap was the programme for the concert. The cover – and all the other promotional materials – were designed by my daughter. It was so great to see her being able to do what she loves so much. Designing is her passion and it has been since she was a little girl. She used to create things out of all sorts of bits and bobs. The mess she left behind her in the process was another story but the delight at being able to create anything has always been there and long may it remain.

Sometimes it is the simplest of things that bring you joy. You can look and listen and it all seems so effortless – so easy – yet this couldn’t be further from the truth. To achieve anything you have to work hard at it. Talent itself is not enough but it sure makes it a whole lot easier. Talent in many respects is one part ability and many more parts determination, motivation and a willingness to give anything a go and give it your all.

It was definitely a de-talented de-lovely evening for me as I enjoyed the fruits of my friend’s and my daughter’s hard work – oh and I can’t forget the rest of the choir and Cole Porter for writing the songs and the music in the first place.

Fun was had tonight with wonderful friends and it felt good.

By the way if you want a taste of Cole Porter music for yourself I highly recommend the movie De-Lovely.
