6.00am – Christmas day began.
7.30am – Breakfast with Lynsey, Mira and Damian.
8.00am – We started to share out our presents with one another. We also had Zofia (my daughter in London) on the phone to share this experience with us. She was with friends who had just moved and they didn’t have an Internet connection yet so we couldn’t use Skype. I felt like my family was all together and it felt wonderful. Thank goodness for technology.
9.00am – We dropped Mira and Damian at my parents. We had a quick catch-up with my parents, my sister and her family.
9.20am – We pop in to see my best friend to exchange gifts.
9.30am – Lynsey and I began the two and a half hour drive to Marton. We were going to have Christmas lunch with his mother, sister and brother-in-law.
12.00pm – Arrived in Marton. Food, presents, a walk around the garden, a quick visit of a few sights.
3.00pm – We get back into the car and head for home.
5.30pm – Arrived home. Unloaded the car and immediately got back into it and headed for my sister’s where all of my family were gathered.
6.00pm – Arrived at my youngest sister’s home (she lives locally) to a house full of people. All the kids were racing about. The adults looked tired and full. We had more food and opening of presents. We watched the sun set, the lights come on all around us. I got to sit there in the beautiful light beside my sister Diana. We didn’t say anything – we didn’t need to – we there together holding each other’s hands and knowing what each was thinking and feeling.
11.30pm – Lynsey, Mira, Damian and I head for home. We decide to make a detour and head for the waterfront to visit the 7 storey (26 metres) high Christmas Tree that has been erected down there. This tree is made up of 37,000 lights which provide 16 million possible colour combinations. It has a space underneath the tree where you can lie on bean bags and view the light show by looking up from within the tree.
As I lay back on my bean bag, surrounded by strangers, looking up at the changing lights I thought about the unusual, but incredibly special, Christmas Day I had just experienced.
Christmas for me is all about people – sharing, being present, going out of your way to do something that will please others, giving your time, energy and love, showing respect and gratitude. Today was a great day for me. I hope it was for you too.
May the spirit of Christmas live with you every day throughout the coming year. Peace and love to all of you.
