133 – True friends

When I was a young girl I owned an autograph book in which I would ask special people to write a message. I have no idea what happened to it but I still remember a particular message one person wrote …

True friends are like diamonds, precious and rare.
False friends are like leaves, scattered everywhere.

As I looked at my friend Ros sitting beside me today in the computer lab I was reminded of this quote. She is indeed a true friend. In the 29 years we have known one another we have shared and experienced a lot.

Ros and I first met when we were both pregnant with our first child. We formed an immediate friendship as we gradually discovered all sorts of connections that brought us closer together. Even though we came from different worlds and led different lives none of this mattered. Over the years we have had periods of doing lots of things together and then there were times when our lives took us down separate paths. Despite all the many challenges thrown at us our friendship has never diminished and we have never lost touch with one another. When we connect it is as though time hasn’t passed and we pick up where we left off – no words or explanations are required.

It somehow seems fitting that we have come away together this week to take part in the same photography course. We have never done anything like this before and it feels great. I love being able to share this experience with someone who understands who I am and what makes me tick. Our days so far have been consumed by learning as much as we can from our incredible tutor and the other participants. As we are staying together our discussions about what has taken place through the day continues well into the evening. This is turning out to be a completely immersive experience.

In between all of the learning and the challenges of the course we are having fun – two friends away from home for a week. Not only am I learning about photographing people I am also learning a lot more about a person who has a special place in my heart. Even after being friends for 29 years we are learning new things about each other and our friendship is only stronger because of this.

Apparently the word Diamond comes from the Greek word Adamas, which means indestructible. It seems so with special friendships – they are indestructible no matter what is thrown at them. I feel so blessed to have Ros in my life.

Manifesto
18. Every day express love. Some people need to hear it. Most people need to see it. Don’t take it for granted.
27. Every day pain is a sign of growing.
45. Every day you are a different person.
