Concert tonight – Bach’s B-Minor Mass, delivered with some conviction by the Orpheus Choir. I find it kind of odd to attend concerts live when I’ve spend years hearing performances on LP, then CD. I know that the recordings are of performances – of course – but I’m always surprised by live performances. In this case it was because I felt the choir left the musicians somewhat in the dust. Shame really – I imagine it’s very very difficult to pull together perfectly balanced sounds – and by comparison, effortless to balance with mixing desks in studio facilities.
In some respects Bach’s B-Minor Mass can be thought of as his greatest hits – it is essentially the summit work, the crowning glory of his life’s work. It’s hard to have a dry eye when you consider such a rich life collection. Thanks to all.
