How to go with the flow

I think for many people ‘going with the flow’ means, “Do nothing, just cruise along, and it’ll be fine”.

I tend to think of it as when you find a little something that you can do, and you love to do, and then you do it over and over until you get really good at it. Nothing worthwhile ever becomes effortless, but you learn how to do good work with easy, seemingly effortless movements.

May what I do flow from me like a river, no forcing and no holding back, the way it is with children.” ― Rainer Maria Rilke

Florida State University psychologist, Anders Ericsson, suggests that this kind of effortless flow can be achieved with practice. A considerable amount of practice; akin to the traditional apprenticeship hours, 10,000 hours (on average) of intentional time, spent dedicated to practice and improvement. It’s not about simply doing the same thing over and over, it’s about continually working on getting better at what you’re doing.

Little droplets of effort combine in love to become the flow.

26. Every day take action. Every small step counts.
