Blue notes

My mum was born on February 1 – today was her birthday. She died a couple of years back, and I still miss her very much.

Mum loved flowers, and she loved the colour blue, and agapanthus flowers always remind me of her.

After Dad died Mum was busting to paint the house. Dad loved green – and so the house was green. We painted the house white, the concrete steps terracotta, and facings of the sills we painted agapanthus blue. I propagated dozens of agapanthus plants to plant along the front the section. I was surprised to find a year later that the plant I’d propagated from was a white flowered variety. I was peeved, but Mum was philosophic.

“Just get on with it!”

The line of blue flowers that we’d talked about, dreamed about, was another year away. They looked fantastic, inter-spaced with the snowy white flower heads.

Mum loved them.
