I was walking toward the car this evening and I was enthralled by a blackbird, signing his heart out, from the top of the church. I paused and took in a deep breath of air. For a moment it felt warm and I believed that Spring isn’t too far away.
I thought how marvelous – the blackbird, so authentic, so unpretentious – giving a spectacular concert to no-one in particular.
The essence of art is when you do something for yourself, not for an audience. Audiences are fickle, you are not. And if you do flirt with being fickle, being untrue to yourself, you know better, and you will let yourself know about it.
The most important audience you’ll ever have is yourself.
